Mum Gives Birth to Heaviest Twins in Scotland

A couple in Edinburgh have given birth to a set of twin boys, believed to be the heaviest twins ever born in Scotland.

Doctor Alanna Merrie, 33, and her husband Paul, 39, knew they were expecting twins, but didn’t expect them to break the record for their weight.

The boys Troy and Kaius weigh a combined 16lb 13oz, nearly 7lbs heavier than most newborn twins and around the weight of a 6-month-old.

The twins were born via caesarean on November 4 and weighed 8lb 12oz and 8lb 1oz respectively.

Alanna is waiting for the confirmation from the records office to see if the twins will hold the title of Scotland’s heaviest twins.

She said: ‘I was trying to find out if they are the heaviest. The records office are researching this for us and should be able to confirm it either way this week.’

Alanna’s huge bump told her her twins would be heavier than average, guessing each baby would be around 5lb.

She said: ‘The scans said they were good sizes and the midwives told me they were growing well. You just don’t expect it though.’

Alanna and Paul weren’t all surprised to find out they were having twins as twins run on both sides of their family.

Alanna admitted she hadn’t bought clothes for the babies as she didn’t want to have to take anything back. She’s grateful she waited until after the birth because her sons have big feet and hands.

The twins’ dad Paul is a personal trainer and spoke of the couple’s delight with their twin boys.

He said: ‘We have a lovely little daughter and now that we have boys, it’s a complete package.

‘It’s always great for any lad to have a boy. We all know boys can get into a bit of trouble but we’ll keep them busy – a lot of sport will do them good.’
