Baby Lailah was born with anencephaly. Anencephaly is the absence of a major portion of the brain, skull, and scalp that occurs during embryonic development. Infants with this disorder do not survive longer than a few hours or possibly days after their birth.*

Her parents made the heartbreaking yet admirable decision of offering baby Lailah’s organs for donation. This image by Anya Wait Photographer shows the surgeon, handing baby Lailah back to her dad after the surgery. The photo captures and evokes emotion as Lailah’s dad grasps the surgeon when his daughter is handed back into his arms.

Lailah’s parents wish for Lailah’s story to be shared to raise awareness of anencephaly and to help change how Wisconsin views neonatal organ donation.
The post by Anya Wait Photographer has been liked over 19,000 times. Baby Lailah donated her heart, lungs, kidneys, pancreas, and liver.

We send our condolences to Lailah’s parents as they mourn the loss of their beautiful daughter, but we also want to honour them for making a beautiful decision to help other babies in health crises requiring an organ transplant. And thank you to Anya Wait for sharing this beautiful image to remind us that life can be a gift, even when it’s lost.
