Plus Sized Advocate On A Mission To End Online Bullying

Callie Thorpe, writer of From the Corners of the Curve and known for her column in Marie Claire U.K. is a fashion blogger and plus sized champion.

Recently she was featured in Vogue along side Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, and Ashley Graham. Initially Thorpe celebrated her success quietly, yet later took to social media to silence those who doubted her worth.

She captioned her photo “To all the people who called me fat, ugly and treated me like trash because of my weight growing up … Catch me on Vogue with your WCW,”

“To be featured in something where they never sort of include anyone of my shape, next to Kendall and all these supermodels, it’s just insane,” she said.

“And it kind of is a bit of a, ‘Well, look at me now. You said all these things and now I’m in Vogue,’ type thing. And I know it’s probably not the most positive attitude to respond to, but I just really wanted to just say it to be like, ‘I’ve proved you all wrong.’”

Growing up, Thorpe battled with her weight issues. She was called names such as “Callorie”, and the negativity associated with the connotations initiated her yoyo dieting.

This spurred her to begin blogging, and her success turned into an inclusive platform where she would later be an advocate for the plus sized.

“I originally came into the blogging world writing a diet diary where I just wrote horrible things about myself, and that’s where I started it,” she said.

“Then I sort of discovered other plus sized blogs and realized that this negative way I was treating myself was really not the right thing to do. It wasn’t positive and wasn’t helping me lose weight.

“It was making me feel more anxious, and more worried, and making me hate myself more. So I decided to have a go at writing my own similar blog and then my own journey into body confidence and body positivity came about.”

The plus sized advocate, married and with a successful career, was often told growing up that she would find it difficult to sustain either. She wanted to silence the haters.

“Someone happened to like my black bikini, and they thought that I looked nice and they thought that I was Vogue-worthy. This is what we need. We need people just to be like, that girl looks amazing in that outfit and that dress, and include her in this list of great people to follow, not because of her size, just because she looks great,” she said.

Callie recently posted this video to her Twitter account in order to tackle the relentless online bullying she receives. She writes:

“Good morning everyone.

This might not be the most cheerful of posts this Monday afternoon but I wanted to share something really personal and difficult with you all.
On Friday I found over 900 violent, abusive comments on an article written about me. They were the worst I have ever read in the 5 years I have been putting myself online and trust me I have received a lot. I decided to share some of them and so many people were disgusted but equally were shocked that this goes on, that people are so hateful.

I decided that in order to highlight the fact that this is happening that I would film a video talking about it in the hopes it will start some conversation about online abuse but especially online abuse against people with bodies like mine who are subjected to the most disturbing unimaginable abuse
Please watch this, it’s 19 minutes long and it was hard for me but it’s important. I hope this starts some conversation on this subject and encourages some change of thought on the meaning of ‘Trolls’ and ‘Haters’

I want you all to know I won’t be silenced by people like this, it won’t stop me helping women feel good about themselves and it won’t stop me speaking out. Hope you join me in speaking out against this problem too ❤️ Link to video is in my story, please subscribe because more videos will be coming from me regarding topics like this ❤️ To the #bopo community I hope you help support me by Sharing this video with your communities, we cannot let this go on any more #endonlinebullying#bodypositive #endonlineharassment
