How to Know if You Have Bad Breath or Halitosis

woman-674978_640

Nobody likes having bad breath, but unfortunately, it isn’t always easy to tell if you are suffering from a bad case of ‘dragon breath’ unless somebody tells you. And let’s face it – most people won’t!

What Causes Bad Breath or Halitosis?

Bad breath can be caused by a number of different factors – the most common of which are:

  • Sulphur producing bacteria that colonises at the back of the tongue
  • Dental issues such a periodontitis or poor oral hygiene
  • Dry mouth – caused by medicines, medical conditions, stress, or alcohol
  • Cigarettes – Smoking starves the mouth of oxygen and can exacerbate bad breath
  • Certain foods e.g. garlic, spices, onions etc. (In this case the bad breath will be short lived and shouldn’t need any treatment).
  • Acid and bile reflux from the stomach
  • Chronic sinusitis can cause post-nasal discharge which can also cause halitosis for sufferers.

How to Tell if You Have Bad Breath

Google the phrase ‘how to tell if you have bad breath’ and you’ll be met with a whole host of suggestions ranging from cupping your hands and breathing into them (which is much more likely to tell you if your hands smell rather than your breath) to licking your wrist and sniffing it after it has dried. Fortunately, there is a much more accurate way to tell.

The Oral Chroma (also aptly known as the Halicheck) is a state of the art breath analyser 100 times more sensitive than the human nose. This latest technology allows dentists to identify from the breath sample where the source of the problem is originating from e.g. the tongue, gums, teeth or throat, enabling the dentist to apply a highly targeted and more effective treatment.

Best of all it’s pain-free and simple.

The Robert Duhi Dental website explains how it works:

The Breath Test is very simple and easy to do. We put a syringe (there is no needle attached) into your mouth while you breathe normally through your nose. It stays in your mouth for a minute then we suck up the Breath sample which is then injected into the Oral Chroma Breath Testing Machine. It takes about 5 minutes to analyse the sample after which we can show you the results and even print them out for you to take home.

Don’t go on worrying about bad breath.

For a limited time only at Rob Duhig Dental you can try the Oral Chroma breath analysis 100% free with your six monthly check up. Simply book in for your appointment and mention their analysis to our friendly reception staff.
