How An Act Of Kindness Melted This Mum’s Heart

Katie Myers of West Palm Beach in Florida, takes her 18 month old son Kaden to the South Florida Science Center and Aquarium almost every day as “at home he doesn’t have much room to explore, so we’re there almost every day because, to Kaden, it’s like his playground.”

On a recent visit, Katie was taken back by the kindness Kaden received from another young boy – a stranger to the family.  Katie was so touched by this boy’s kindness that she took to the special Facebook page she created for Kaden – Kaden’s Cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy  – as at At 7 months old, Kaden was diagnosed with a degenerative condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy a condition which causes extreme muscle weakness and has left laden unable to walk.  In her post, Katie thanked the young boy for helping Kaden and for being so kind.

“To the little boy at the science museum, I don’t know who  you are, but thank you for being amazing. You let my son play and engage with you. You helped him pick up balls from the floor when you saw that he could not.  You didn’t ask what was wrong with  him or why he couldn’t walk, you just saw him. Kaden is a lot like you, he is very curious and wildly smart. He want to know how everything works. Thank you for helping him turn the lever when you noticed he was too weak to do it himself. You will probably never see this but by just being you, you make this world better.”

To her complete surprise, Katie’s post has gone viral and spread actress the world with over  240,000 likes and 55,000 shares of her original post. The story has also been picked up by several television stations and newspapers sharing her story of kindness.

Katie has expressed her shock at how quickly her story has spread saying “The point, honestly wasn’t to find him (the boy pictured in the photo)… the point was to show a different side of disability and for people to really understand that people, despite disability, are people first. I think that’s the main reason why it’s gone viral.”

Lauren founded her website Create Bake Make as a way to justify the ridiculous amount of baking she loves to do. She has a super sweet tooth and enjoying a slice of cake (or two) is one of her guilty indulgences. As a Mum of two little boys, when she isn't creating fun activities for the kids or breaking up arguments over toy trucks and cars, you will find her in the kitchen baking up a storm - or hiding in the pantry with the latest cooking magazine and a hot cup of coffee!
